It’s not really the occasion to throwing statistics at you at this hour, but statistically, we are more genuinely disinterested in new music releases than we were say, 5 years or go. That’s according to a midyear report from US market monitor Luminate, anyways.
As we know with the Kate Bush returning to the charts, we are often treating ‘old’ music as ‘new’ music with many of us not even knowing who Kate Bush is (the horror of it).
Whether you choose to accept it as the norm, is completely up to you. For me, I think it’s total poppycock. I strive to learn about a new band or song every time I log in to work every working day of the week. That’s probably because my job is actively searching unlicensed music festivals all day and I’m bound to found in a new wormhole of new music. But still, I love founding out new music.
Just from playing similar artists that I was recommended from artificial sources (Spotify) or real sources (humans), or playing alternative radio stations I’ve not really listened to before, I’ve fallen for many catalogues over the past days.
Some were hard to avoid, yes. Wet Leg seem to be everywhere right now, apparently slap-stick alternative indie isn’t a thing anymore and they’re the only band doing it. Still, their music is fun and hits enjoying music in all the right places. Some were more off the beaten track and some were on the up.
Kings and Bears‘ Warriors. To Viagra Boys’ Punk Rock Loser. Finally settling on Exit Kid with We’re Strange.
Not to mention the plethora of artist line-ups I’ve not even got around to yet from underground music festivals supporting such like-minded artists. Houghton Festival. Green Island Festival. Funk Up The Farm. Some of the best festivals dotted around the UK are the best festivals simply for their eclectic taste and adoration for the new and upcoming artists. Sometimes staying away from the favourites and the overplayed songs isn’t always necessarily the way to go.
