Maribou State (Chris Davids and Liam Ivory) are a force to be reckoned with. Vintage soul-infused daps of downtempo electronica, the UK duo have established themselves as major players on the global dance music circuit.
A genre-fluid range spanning eight EPs and three studio albums, they have garnered a following from the familiar Ibiza sun-setters to those looking more for a soothing nightcap.
It was 2015’s Portraits where the boys first saw a major glimpse in trailing after the industry and its coattails. Before long, Midas and Steal became dance staples, tracked amongst those greats before them.
Now, their third and most recent albums, Hallucinating Love, is hitting all the heights all over again. Honing on this electronic expansiveness of touching many-a influences aswell as collaborations, their third comes during a time of community spirit – aswell as a time of difficulty. Following Chris coming to terms with a major brain condition, Hallucinating Love has become a beacon of hopefulness and resolve in a particularly trying time for the pair – which undoubtedly drew them closer together into a flurry of creative knack.
The album pores out a sense of vibrancy and intimacy that we’ve not quite seen from the electronic duo just yet. Blackoak is an aching anthem deplored with gleaming violin strings while Otherside is a funky testament to getting through troubling times, with Holly Walker’s beautiful vocals rounding off another baller. Their stand-out All I Need is a doozy of new vibrance, while retaining it to a neo-soul-like of nostalgic tipple.
A rich organic sound that is distinctly their own, Maribou State have multiple reasons as to why they are so popular in the dance circuit. Their new record just simply adds another to that list.
