The Anniversary Album Debate: STOP REHASHING THE SAME ALBUMS!

30th year this, 30th year that.

“Buy this anniversary album of the same album that came out 30 years ago – this time it has a sparkly cover!”

Much to the immediate decline of his brother, Liam Gallagher is set to take on a sprawling Definitely Maybe tour after 30 years since its initial release date. The whole tour itself sold out in mere minutes. Due to its close connections with Oasis, the sold-out tour has severe question marks if it denotes the (not really) reunion of the ’90s band that shook the world up since their familial formation. Whether or not Noel will appear on the stage.. whether or not the reunion will be announced there and then. Frankly, it’s time to stop beating this dead horse. It starts with Radio X (Oasis FM) from formulating ideas in the heads of needy fans who want it to happen more than anything else. It ends with Liam keeping things as they are and continuing as a solo. But, for any opportunity for easy money – you would take it, wouldn’t you?

Any mention of musical nostalgia and the world goes into pandemonium. Rather than looking back on past legendary titles, why don’t we look forward to the future legends of the game? Spark up the same hype and glitter with our future musicians in the game? They’ve had more than enough time in the sun and it’s time for somebody else to take up the mantle.

Another example is Nirvana’s 30th Live special of In Utero – an album that already had a super deluxe release, a silver super deluxe release and now a 30th. All for a band that were forced to not continue in the mid ’90s. I get that it’s important to keep up appearances with bands that seemingly lose relevance by each passing year and to celebrate these giant albums but the re-releases are more a rich-quick scheme than a committed celebration. It all just seems… lazy. Lazy marketing from labels and machines in the game who want a few more wads to get them to month end. A desperate attempt for attention like those kids in the playground. But it’s needy and somewhat tacky.

Am I right? Am I wrong? Let me know your thoughts!
