Yard Act are open for business for the second act. And They’re not intending to do the same thing twice.
Grease up your jukeboxes again, Yard Act are back for 2023 with their first single The Trench Coat Museum, off their upcoming sophomore album. It comes after The Overload – the band’s first flavouring – in 2022 brought about a seismic wave in the quirky festerings of post-punk, resulting in them taking No.2 spot in the UK Album Charts and a shortlist for a Mercury Prize for that year. Not to mention a flurry of sold-out headline shows, a blistering UK tour and a festival season that brought the name of Yard Act to many people’s minds and lips. Sexy.
Now, they return with a techno-inducing post-punk offering of gritty, glitchy guitars, pulsating synths, double-tracked cowbell to the max and deadpan lyrics, as the new sound is brought about by Gorillaz affiliate Remi Kabaka Jr. It’s not often you see the first from the follow-up album to produce a 8-minute song but Yard Act aren’t your normal band. Steaming on the coals of indie-alternative, you can see Yard Act’s The Overload not being everyone’s cup of tea, with the talking vocals and jarring instrumentals proving a lot for many to handle. Some may say, the overload of discontent. But with a hopes of steering into a polyphonic direction of pulsating grooves burning on the dance floor, maybe more will come round to the prospect of the Leeds four-piece being their new favourite band.
The band’s James Smith said he wrote the song after their rise to fame “left us open to security and disdain just as much as love and appreciation,” as there’s nothing stronger for an ego-comedown than five minutes on Twitter. The video that comes with it, is equally magnetising and expertly directed:
“You know the history of the trench coat, what it represents and who it’s for? well i want to know who’d want a coat so close to the floor..”
